Talk:1787 survey map
I disagree with the statement: "About 1785 Stephen Van Rensselaer III hired William Cockburn to survey his Helderberg wilderness in preparation for signing leases with the squatters living there in the valleys..."
Leases for the Beaverdam date back to 1774, so Van Rensselaer was aware of the squatters at least by then. I also believe this must be the second survey, since the earlier 1774 deeds specified acreage, consistent with the survey in 1787. Also of note is some of the surveys in 1787 show properties that are squared off for leases signed in 1774, leading me to conclude there must be an earlier survey, though it may not be extant.
