Salem M. Tallman was born in 1836 in Huntersland. He lived most his adult life in Rensselaerville.

This diary was transcribed as written which includes many misspellings, including name misspellings. Unlike other diaries, this diary did not have, days and dates pre-printed. All days and dates were written in by Salem and they too were transcribed as written.

  • Jan the 13th 1899 Fair - Done chores - Went too Medusa - Paid O. FROST - then to Medusa - Paid my Taxes - called XXXX SISON - Paid him 4 - drawe three load of Ice fo FLETCHER.

  • Mon 20 - Cloudy - I done chores in the morn. I done them in eve - Havent felt well.

  • Th 23 - Stormy havent felt well. E. BANELS and GLEN TRAVER came. DOC SHAFER came to see MARY. I had him leve me some medason.

  • Mon 7 - Fair - Done chores - Mowed a lit - raked and Put it up.
  • Tues 8 - Fair - took some papers to Preston Holow got 2 Pa of Pants, a pair XXXX - Thrashed some rye.
  • We 9 - Fair - finished Thrashing - PX help OLA get 2 load of Oats - mowed a litle. Paid F. ALGER.
  • We 10 - Rained some - OLA and F. helped me get part of a load of hay - fixed Bee sectens - Paid EDA HOTATEN 50 ct on work.

Additional Remarks

Salem Tallman was born in 1836, and was 63 years old when he wrote this diary. He lived to be 81 years old. At this point when he is writing this diary he refers to his only son Fletcher often as “F’ likely due to limited writing space in this diary. Fletcher was married to his first wife Mary Tappan at this time.
